moors. La Coumo looks over the historic village of Laurac le Grand and
the moors of the Piège in the north-west corner of the
department of the Aude (region of Languedoc-Roussillon) The hill-top
fortified village (now a listed national monument) was once the capital
of the Lauragais and a centre of political and religious strife between
France, Spain, the Catholic Church and the Cathar 'heretics'. Today it
is no longer 'grand' but it is still very pretty and interesting to
explore its quiet traffic-free lanes which mount towards its imposing
church, dominating the landscape for miles around. There are pretty
walks giving directly on to the moors, where you can look over a vast
plain and the foothills of the Pyrenees.r

Supermarkets
within 10 minutes drive in nearby Castelnaudary, Villasavary, Bram and
Montreal. Mirepoix, with a famous market in its medieval town square is
20 minutes away. The battlements and pageantry of the walled-city of
Carcassonne are at 30 minutes. The Canal du Midi is nearby and the
Mediterranean coast is barely an hour, the city of Toulouse is only 50
minutes (both Toulouse and Carcassonne have airports). For those who
love leisurely driving, the quiet back-roads are a pleasure exceeded
perhaps only by the pleasure of country walking and wildlife.

Like
many quiet villages in the Languedoc, Laurac has no shops or
café or public transport a bakers' van brings bread to the
village. However there are plenty of shops, cafés,
restaurants
and The house -- once the forge of the village blacksmith -- is
situated on a slight hillside, separated from the main part of the
village by a little road that winds up the valley, the enclosed photos
show the view from the garden with moors and fields to north, south and
east, and the village towering up in front to the west.
The house is two-storied but appears to be only one because part is
concealed by the high rear garden .There is an 8m x 4m swimming pool,
surrounded by lawns, terrace and veranda, space for browsing and/or
barbecuing in sun or shade. There is a portable
‘glasshouse’ covering system which protects the
pool and
makes for warmer bathing if the weather is cool. The garden is peaceful
and safe for children; it is equipped with tables, chairs and sun-beds,
and trees and parasols provide shade. Children, incidentally, are
welcome to come and see the animals on our nearby farm.

Ground floor : entrance to large lounge with
open-plan kitchen area , fitted cupboards and surfaces, cooker,
fridge/freezer , micro-wave, washing-machine, well-equipped with
cooking utensils and dining-furniture, easy chairs, television, and a
wood-burning fire is installed to supplement electric radiators .
Bedroom with double bed and en-suite bathroom, bath, shower &
WC.
Open spiral staircase rises to:
Upper floor: one bedroom with a
double bed, one
bedroom with two single beds, second bathroom with shower, WC and
hand-basin, washing machine. Large open-plan landing-space with
sofa-bed and curtains makes possible a fourth sleeping area. Exit from

have agreed availability we will ask you to send us an ordinary British
bank cheque (or agreed alternative) for one-quarter of the total rent;
on receipt of that we write to confirm the reservation with advice on
further payment (We simply ask you to send another cheque for the rest
2 months before the holiday).
The rents quoted here include all services, bedding, house towels and
fuel.
