, sleeping 8 and 7, above-ground pool, in magnificent setting (houses
can be rented separately or together by one large
group).
The hamlet of Roubichoux lies in a valley on the edge of the foothills of the
Pyrenees, where the western corner of the county of the Aude gives way to the
rugged Ariége. It is at the end of a quiet lane so there is no through
traffic to disturb the peace of this beautiful place. The houses stand on a gentle
slope of the valley looking across woodlands & hills to the mountains ; they
are surrounded by large gardens and 225 acres of land of woods & meadow where
visitors are free to roam at will. To one side of the houses is a lovely Romanesque
church, lovingly restored by the owners & their friends, an experimental
vineyard, and a stone-terraced ‘ampitheatre’ for occasional cultural
events and fetes. The owners --who are landscapers by profession – and
who, in effect, own the entire hamlet & its surrounding land which has been
in their family for generations –have invested their love & skills
in ‘adding to nature’ and thus creating a place of exceptional beauty.
At the same time there is nothing ‘precious’ about this place ; it
is a modest, family-based affair, child-oriented, devoted to giving visitors
a good holiday, as vigorous, or as quiet, as they want it to be………….

Despite
the rural calm, Roubichoux, situated in the commune of
Sonnac-sur-L’Hers, is not islolated from good facilities.
The shops, cafés & restaurants of Chalabre & Mirepoix
(historic bastide with superb market in its arcaded square)
are within 20 minutes drive (and what a pleasure to drive
these quiet country roads through picturesque countryside
!). The castles of Montsegur & Puivert, & other
places associated with the tragic history of the Cathar
martyrs, are nearby – and in 40 minutes one can see
Foix and the prehistoric cave-paintings of Niaulx. The
chateau of nearby Chalabre organizes family days, a mixture
of pageant, arts & crafts and good fun. The walled
city of Carcassonne is about 50 minutes drive & Toulouse
just over an hour --- so access is easy from their airports.
90 minutes drive takes you to Andorra and the Mediterranean
--in opposite directions, of course !
The same loving care devoted to the surroundings has
been given to to the building of the modern house (Tour
Basse)
and the modernization of the traditional house (Church
House) to one side of it. Everything is fitted to a high
quality,
the older house a little less so than the modern one. From
every room one sees a pretty view……….

Maison
de La Tour Basse
the
modern house is four-bedroomed for a maximum of 8 people.
It has free WIFI internet access available.
Ground floor --- open-plan living & dining room, spacious & bright,
with three-piece suite and TV with satellite box equipped
for many channels, including English. The kitchen has gas-hob,
oven, extractor, micro-wave, fridge-freezer, dish-washer,
washing machine, kettle, toaster & espressor machine.
There is a ground-floor bedroom with two single beds.
Upstairs ---three bedrooms , two with
double beds, and one with two single beds. There is also
a child-bed. The bathroom
has two wash-basins, bath & shower ; there is a separate
w.c.
0utside --- terraced dining-area for
8, spacious lawns and above-ground pool (5m x 3.5m,
about 4 ft deep, see photo).
It is likely that a sunken pool will be constructed
in the future. Plenty of garden furniture & sun-loungers.

Maison
de l’Eglise --- some 40 yards from the other, near
the lovely old church, both built in the same lovely stone,
has 3 bedrooms for a max. of 7 people. Ground floor ---spacious
open-plan living/dining room & well-fitted kitchen
(gas hob, oven, micro-wave, fridge, dish-washer & washing-machine,
cafetiére, kettle etc).
Upstairs --- three bedrooms , one with
double bed of 140 cm, two with double beds of 120 cms (‘three-quarter
beds’) . With an additional folding –bed the
house can sleep ideally 5 , although 7 possible if desired
(if 120 cm beds are seen as double rathen than single).
There is a small bathroom with hand-basin, shower and W.
C.
Outside --dining-area and garden as above. The guests in this house can use the
swimming-pool beside the other house but only when both houses are let to one
large group . When the houses are let separately, they will be regarded as separate
units ; the pool will be attached to Maison de la Tour Basse.

LETTINGS RUN FROM SATURDAY TO SATURDAY EXCEPTION POSSIBLE BY CONSULTATION

When we
have agreed availability we will ask you to send us an ordinary British
bank cheque (or agreed alternative) for one-quarter of the total rent;
on receipt of that we write to confirm the reservation with advice on
further payment (We simply ask you to send another cheque for the rest
2 months before the holiday).
The rents quoted here include all services, bedding, house towels and
fuel.
